Mic Check is designed to solve one audio-routing problem without listening to you. The app never records, analyzes, or transmits audio.

What the Mac app does

Mic Check reads metadata that macOS provides about available audio input devices and the current system default input. It changes that default when needed to enforce the microphone order you chose.

Your preferences are stored locally on your Mac. Mic Check does not require microphone permission because it does not open or capture a microphone audio stream.

Diagnostic logs

Mic Check keeps small, rotating diagnostic logs on your Mac. Core operational events are logged so failures are not silent. If you enable detailed debug logging, the app records additional snapshots useful for support.

Logs may contain:

• Mic Check version and build number
• macOS version and Mac model identifier
• Microphone names, Core Audio identifiers, and connection types
• Timestamps, input-change events, Mic Check responses, and error messages

Logs never contain audio, transcripts, dictation text, or the content of your conversations. They remain on your Mac unless you deliberately export and send a file to support.

Software updates

The direct-download edition periodically requests an update feed from MicCheckMac.com when automatic checks are enabled, and you can turn those checks off in Preferences. A request necessarily includes ordinary network metadata such as an IP address and user agent. The feed is used to deliver cryptographically signed Mic Check releases, not for advertising profiles. The Mac App Store edition uses Apple’s update system and does not include the direct updater.

Support

If you email miccheck@8oclock.co, the message, contact address, and attachments you provide are used only to answer and diagnose your request. Diagnostic attachments are deleted within 90 days after the support request is closed, unless they are needed longer to investigate an active issue or the law requires retention.

Website analytics

When enabled for the production launch, MicCheckMac.com uses Plausible Analytics for aggregate page views, referrers, campaign tags, and actions such as download, App Store, and support clicks. The site does not use session replay or sell personal data. Analytics remains disabled until the Plausible account and production domain are configured, privacy-reviewed, and verified.

Google Ads conversion measurement is disabled by default. If search ads are activated, the site may load Google’s conversion tag to measure whether an ad led to a download or purchase. Applicable consent controls and this policy will be updated before that tag is enabled in regions where consent is required.

Payments and downloads

Paid checkout is not enabled yet. The selected merchant of record, its privacy terms, the seller’s legal identity, price, refund policy, and purchase-data retention will be added here before accepting payment.

Your choices

You can disable detailed debug logging at any time, inspect exported logs before sharing them, delete local logs by removing the app’s Mic Check log folder, or ask support to delete material you sent.
