Access versus input choice

Microphone permission versus microphone selection on macOS.

These settings solve different problems. Permission decides whether an app may access a microphone. Selection decides which available microphone the Mac or app uses.

Use the symptom to choose the right setting

A permission problem can show up as an access warning, a request to enable the microphone, or an app that receives no microphone audio. A selection problem usually means audio is arriving, but it comes from a different device than the one you intended.

Check microphone permission

  1. Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
  2. Click Privacy & Security, then click Microphone.
  3. Find the app and turn its microphone access on or off as intended.
  4. If macOS or the app asks you to quit and reopen it, do that before testing again.

Apple describes this list as the control for which apps are allowed to use the microphone. See Control access to the microphone on Mac.

An app generally appears in the list after it has requested microphone access. Turning access on does not choose a particular microphone for that app.

Check microphone selection

  1. Open System Settings > Sound > Input.
  2. Select the microphone you want as the macOS system default.
  3. Speak and confirm its input-level meter moves.
  4. Open the app’s own audio or microphone setting, if it has one.
  5. Choose System Default to follow macOS, or choose the intended named device inside that app.

Built-in Dictation is another distinct case

Built-in macOS Dictation has its own Microphone source in System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation. That source is separate from the Mac’s Sound input. Use the Dictation wrong-microphone guide for that control.

Where Mic Check fits

Mic Check changes and protects the macOS system default input. It does not grant microphone permission to other apps, and it does not need to record or listen to microphone audio itself.

Once an app has the access it needs and is configured to follow System Default, Mic Check can restore the highest-ranked connected system input if another device or app changes it.
